SUMMARY:Foundation Night Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Foundation Night Meeting is a new initiative from the Canberra Region Amateur Radio Club\, held on the first Wednesday of every second month (Feb\, Apr\, Jun\, Aug\, Oct\, Dec). \nThese sessions focus primarily on Foundation-qualified operators within the club\, including those recently qualified as well as longer term Foundation members who would like to become more active in this diverse and enjoyable hobby but may not yet have had the opportunity or guidance to do so. \nThe evenings are informal and practical\, providing an opportunity to ask questions\, see demonstrations\, and learn from other members. Topics may include equipment selection and demonstrations\, antenna building\, contesting\, and operating Amateur Radio outdoors. \nAll CRARC members are welcome to attend\, and we especially encourage experienced operators to join us to share their knowledge through discussion and demonstrations\, helping others become more engaged and enjoy the many aspects of Amateur Radio. \nEven if you are not yet qualified but are interested in Amateur Radio (and perhaps considering gaining your qualification)\, you are very welcome to attend. \nAs usual Coffee\, Tea and biscuits will be available. \nPizza may be available\, dependent on numbers and consensus. The usual $5.00 per slice of Pizza is requested to cover costs with a Vegetarian option for those that prefer it. \n

DESCRIPTION:On the 4th Wednesday of each month\, CRARC hold a General Meeting for members and visitors. Doors open at 6:30pm for a start shortly thereafter. \nThe main part of the meeting will be a presentation on a topic of interest and it’s also an opportunity for local Amateurs to get to know each other. \nThis will be a flowerpot building session. We will be building the 2m “flowerpot” coaxial dipole antennas (in a rollup configuration for portable operations. This is a very compact yet good performing antenna that significantly improves 2m performance over the HT antennas and can still be used with other radios including mobile rigs. \nSufficient materials have been obtained to manufacture approximately 30 antennas and these will be available on a cost recovery basis –  $15 for club members and $20 for non members. Payment for materials will be on the night (prior to commencing construction) and will be accepted by either cash or paypal. \nWe will also have tools and test gear for the construction activity\, but if you have them handy\, it would be useful to bring along a small sharp knife (i.e. a utility knife/stanley knife) and some snippers/scissors (suitable for cutting the coax braid) as participants will likely outnumber the tools we will have available on the night. \nIMPORTANT: we need prior confirmation to ensure that we have enough materials available. If you are intending to participate in an antenna build at the meeting\, please visit http://thq.fyi/se/oFRzaxw to confirm you wish to attend. Note there are options to select that you want to pay on the night or alternatively pay online prior to the meeting. We anticipate having a small number of components for additional attendees but don’t count on this\, quantities of additional components will be limited – please let us know if you want to participate in the antenna build night to lock in component availability.

Doors open at 7:30pm for an 8pm start. \nComtek Radio\, a new VK online company run by VK6SJ and VK1KAZ will be providing a presentation at the September meeting on the Remote Radio Operations including the FlexRadio range of products.  The Flex range of equipment is being marketed for easy incorporation into remote setups as well as for normal home use.  Comtek Radio’s presentation outlines the FlexRadio range of equipment and provides a demonstration of multi operator\, multi transmitter remote station using FlexRadio  products. We will be show casing our demonstration system in Perth on the night via a Teams session.

Doors open at 7:30pm for an 8pm start \nCRARC Presentation August 2024 – The beginning of 50 years of home computing\nDale Hughes VK1DSH\nIn August 1974 Electronics Australia magazine published the first in a series of articles describing a computer that could be constructed at home. It was the first computer kit in an Australia and only missed being the first in the world by a couple of weeks. The computer was designed by Jamieson Rowe and was called EDUC-8. It was an 8-bit machine built using TTL logic chips alone i.e. no microprocessor\, and general design of EDUC-8 was similar to the DEC PDP-8 minicomputers of the era. Surprisingly there is active group of people building recreations of the original design and a kit of parts is available. \nThe presentation will describe the reasons Jim Rowe designed and published the machine\, the technical details of the machine\, aspects of programing the machine\, its construction and demonstrate a working EDUC-8.

DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\nAfter a prolonged absence\, the CRARC end of year / Christmas function is back again and this year’s function will be held at the club rooms on Wednesday 22 November with doors opening at 7:30 for an 8pm start. \nA BBQ dinner and refreshments will be provided by the club – helpers to prepare and assist would be very much welcomed – for those wanting to do so\, please email the committee on committee@crarc.org.au and advise of your availability. \nQSL Cards – Mike VK1OO is planning to mail off the outwards QSL cards over the Christmas break. Cub members wanting to get their cards included in this mailout can bring them to the meeting and pass to Mike. \nAs a reminder\, we will also be raffling off three of the Retevis RT3S 2/70 DMR/Analogue handheld radio packages (for details please see VK1News email of 27 Sep) at the end of the year function\, so yet another great reason to attend on the night.
