Subject: Upcoming ARISSS Contact 29th August – Rockingham Scouts Group WA
Hello,
On Saturday the 29th of August, Rockingham Scout Group, Rockingham, Western Australia will have an arranged contact with Astronaut Jack Hathaway KJ5NIV onboard the International Space Station. Contact is scheduled for Rockingham Scout Group, Rockingham, Western Australia 8:56:33 UTC or 4:56 PM AWST or 6:56:33 PM AEST.
The ground station for this contact will be John, ZS6JON located in Paardekrall, South Africa.
You can view the countdown dashboard for this contact created by Stephen VK4SJV here: https://spaceopslab.com/ariss-rockingham
All radio amateurs around the world can listen to this contact live via EchoLink *HAM* Node 69556, and IRLP Node 9556 as well as a range of other linked VoIP modes. Please visit the https://anzel.radio/ website for the full list of all modes and Talkgroups.
Contacts generally last around ten minutes with callbacks taken by John, VK3HJQ, immediately afterwards for reporting back to NASA. We hope that you enjoy this contact and look forward to hearing from you on the callbacks.
We’ve noticed an increasing number of Australian & New Zealand repeater networks connecting to either the Echolink or IRLP nodes to listen to these ARISS contacts and subsequently extending the reach well beyond the confines of the VoIP networks. This has resulted in a considerable increase in the number of listeners with many stating they had never actually heard an ARISS contact before and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity in having done so.  Thank you to those repeater operators for making this possible and I hope that you continue this with further contacts.
New ARISS YouTube channel
Following on from the above, I’m pleased to advise the establishment of an ARISS Australia & New Zealand YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/@ARISSAustraliaNewZealand
The purpose of the channel is to provide the general public with access to live audio of any scheduled ARISS contact involving students in Australia & New Zealand. This means that anyone with a mobile phone, tablet, or PC can now listen in to these exciting contacts outside of the amateur radio network. Please note that the channel is still in the very early stages of development, however, the audio for this upcoming contact will be streamed live to anyone that connects to it.
You could share this YouTube channel with family, friends, groups, schools, Men’s Sheds, etc. or anyone else you think may be interested in this facet of Amateur Radio. By providing them with listening access you may just spark their interest in approaching you to find out how to become a radio amateur!
Hit the SUBSCRIBE button to be notified whenever a future ARISS contact is about to go live and listen in.
TIP: Choose the highest playback resolution available from the YouTube setting control in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. Enlarge the screen for maximum detail. Comments in the text box are welcome.
Request for ARISS recordings
In addition to live streaming, the channel will host a number of past and future Australian & New Zealand ARISS contacts and associated clips of media coverage. There are only a few videos posted to start things off; however, the number will increase over time as I receive more videos. If you, your club or someone you know has previously recorded an ARISS contact and would like to see it added to this channel, please get in contact with me. The video recording could be of the contact itself, photographs, or a televised news segment such as the one currently posted on the channel.
In closing, I attach a couple of articles to read. One is about Tony Hutchison who is one the pioneers of the amateur radio and space station contacts in Australia. He was interviewed recently by ARISS and his story makes fascinating reading. The other article is about Elena Selmi a young Italian student who has an inspiring story to tell about what set her on an exciting career path.
If you feel inspired to involve your club in an ARISS contact, please visit the ARISS page on the WIA website:https://www.wia.org.au/members/ariss/apply/ or contact me directly by email.
Please share this email with your membership.
